Phoenix hits the 30s. Flagstaff, Show Low, Prescott and Payson get hard freezes and snow. Arizona heating systems get less run time than the AC, which is exactly why failures surprise people on the first cold night.

Gas Furnace: Why It Won't Ignite

  1. Cracked hot-surface igniter. You hear the inducer motor and a click, then nothing. Most common gas furnace failure.
  2. Dirty flame sensor. Classic symptom: burners light, run 3–5 minutes, then shut off and retry. A coated sensor cannot prove flame.
  3. Pressure switch / blocked flue. Bird nests and debris in the vent are common after a long off-season.
  4. Limit switch lockout. Usually a filthy filter or closed registers overheating the heat exchanger.
  5. Failed control board or transformer. Arizona attic heat is brutal on electronics.

See furnace repair for our full diagnostic process.

Heat Pump: Why It Blows Cool Air in Heat Mode

Heat pumps deliver air around 90–105 degrees — noticeably cooler than a gas furnace's 120–140 degrees. That is normal and often mistaken for a fault. Real problems include:

  • Stuck reversing valve — the unit is physically still in cooling mode
  • Failed defrost board or sensor — outdoor coil ices over and heating collapses
  • Low refrigerant charge — heating capacity drops sharply first
  • Aux heat strips not energizing — failed sequencer, relay or thermostat staging

Details on heat pump repair.

Why Your Winter Electric Bill Spiked

Auxiliary electric heat strips can draw 10–20 kW. If your heat pump is undercharged, iced up, or the thermostat is misconfigured, those strips carry the whole load and your bill doubles. This is one of the most common and most fixable problems we find. Correct thermostat staging matters enormously.

Carbon Monoxide Safety — Non-Negotiable

  • Install CO alarms on every level and within 10 feet of bedrooms
  • Never use a gas oven, grill or unvented heater to heat a room
  • Soot, rust streaks, a yellow flickering burner flame, or headaches and nausea that improve when you leave the house are all warning signs
  • If a CO alarm sounds: get everyone outside, then call 911 and the gas utility before calling us

Any gas heating repair we perform includes a combustion safety check and CO test. Need heating repair today? Call (855) 424-2960.
