- Switch the thermostat to OFF (not just up) to prevent a frozen coil or compressor damage.
- Check the breaker panel and the outdoor disconnect; reset a tripped breaker exactly once.
- Replace an obviously clogged air filter — this alone resolves a surprising number of no-cool calls.
- Close blinds on sun-facing windows, run ceiling fans, and move to the coolest room of the house.
- Hydrate, and check on neighbors who may also be without cooling.
